Place all wrapped gifts in the center of playing area. Count the number of people playing the game and gifts so that they match, (5 players, 5 gifts).
The amount of numbered wooden nickels you will need should equal the amount of players, minus one for the double-sided character wooden nickel. (For example, if there are 18 players you will need 17 numbered wooden nickels numbered 01-17 and the double-sided character wooden nickel). Place the numbered wooden nickels being used in the red velvet bag plus the double-sided character wooden nickel.
The lucky player who pulls the double-sided character wooden nickel may take their turn at any time to steal a gift OR he or she may wait until the end of the game to choose the last gift or steal a gift that is not out of play.
To begin, each player pulls a wooden nickel from the red velvet bag, but does not reveal what number they have until it is their turn. Number 01 wooden nickel goes first, then 02…etc. Each player returns their wooden nickel to the red velvet bag after their turn.
Player 01 chooses a wrapped gift of their choice to unwrap and reveal. Player 02 has the option to choose a wrapped gift or to steal the gift from player 01. If he or she chooses to steal, then player 01 chooses another gift to unwrap. Player 03 can choose an unwrapped gift or steal from either player 01 or 02. If they choose to steal then the player stolen from must choose an unwrapped gift or steal a different item. As you move through the turns, there are more items to steal if your gift is stolen. Note: You cannot steal a gift back that has just been stolen from you on the same turn.
The player with wooden nickel number 01 becomes the recorder after his or her turn. This player will record the number of times a gift is stolen. He or she will write in the gift description and place a check in the box each time it is stolen on the stolen gift note pad. A gift can only be stolen 3 times. Once a gift has been stolen 3 times it is OUT. No player can steal that gift once it is out, not even the player with the double-sided character wooden nickel. When the last gift is opened, the game is over.
